Pride Fest

As June approaches, we need to talk about why this month has become so valuable to our current climate. While some cities choose to honor different weekends, the entire month of June marks the celebration of Pride month. Kansas City’s Pride weekend is celebrated the first weekend of June in Berkley Riverfront Park with the theme this year representing “Diversity Not Division”. The whole idea of Pride month is to provide an inclusionary event where all people can feel celebrated for who they are and be surrounded by those who support and love them. Kansas City starting doing their Pride fest in 1975, with the first one being hosted at a local Gay community house. While Kansas City may not be the biggest celebration in the country, we are approaching the 50 year mark of holding the festival and I am so proud with how much we’ve grown, especially for being in the midwest.

The Pride Fest has recently been hosted by Riverfront Berkley Park down by the river and has multiple musical acts that will be appearing throughout the weekend. Closing off the celebration on Sunday with Daya which is a pretty exciting ending! The park will offer a safe space for those in and in support of the LGBTQ community to come and mingle while celebrating one another for just being themselves. If you choose to bring kids, all 12 and under are free which I think creates a pretty neat culture to have families and children encouraged to come and be around their loved ones. If you attend Pride Fest, your purchased ticket will grant you free entry into Missie B’s or Sidekicks that weekend.

There are a few different ways you can participate in the weekend or month still if you are undecided. There is still volunteer spots remaining for the set up before, after or during the event. The volunteers receive free entry, lunch, invitation to hangout after your “shift” and of course the wonderful feeling of helping out in your own community. You can also just attend Pride Fest to show your friends and family that are apart of the LGBTQ community that you are here for them and support them. Remember that the whole month is spent to honor the community, so maybe try and reach out this month to those who could use the extra love and support. Let this be a reminder for you to spread some love.

To kick off Pride weekend and to show our loyalty to the community, here at Landlocked we’ve decided to do a Memorial Day Sale! It will specifically be on the Equality line shirts shown throughout the post (only the short sleeved ones) will be 50% for the weekend! It would be the perfect shirt to wear throughout the month or to Pride Fest itself. Not to mention it is super lightweight and breezy for the upcoming summer heat we will all soon be feeling. Show your support for the LGBTQ community this month and grab an Equality shirt from us at a stellar Price. Hope to see all of your faces at Pride Fest May 31st-June 2nd!

Until Next Week,
